I haven't read the book and if this trailer is any indication, and it should be, this is one creepy thrill ride! Yikes! From the mind of the creator of the CSI: series, Anthony Zuiker, comes Level 26 in its visual form.
Last week I talked about trailers coming in a variety of different formats/styles/content. Here's a book trailer from a creative mind(s) with money to spare. Live action with actors is probably the most costly of all book trailer productions. I think Mr. Zuiker has that covered. Plus, you get the 'Godfather of Black Cinema' in actor/director Bill Duke, Commando and Predator fame among others, to star in a few snippets of action, this is big time. Plus long-time screen veteran, Michael Ironside from Scanners, Starship Troopers, Total Recall (1990), and Top Gun to name very few.
The freaky villain creates the main terror and spurs the imagination as to what is his M.O., who's the next victim, how he will dispense of said victim and what's Level 26? All the earmarks of an effective thriller story. In any story that focuses on the mystery, suspense, thriller, horror, science fiction and fantasy genres, the villain drives the narrative. Writers, no matter what the mediums you work in, make sure you create a first-rate antagonist. Think of The Terminator, Hans Gruber in Die Hard, John Doe in Se7en, Hannibal The Cannibal, The Tooth Fairy and Buffalo Bill in the Lector trilogy. Despite the efforts of Kyle Reese, Sarah and John Connor, John McClane, William Somerset, David Mills, Clarice Starling and Will Graham respectively, those bad guys drive the narrative. Our heroes react to what these cyborgs and criminals do all the while playing catch-up.
How effective is this trailer? Check out the comments about it. Warning. Some are R-rated, but you'll get the point. Don't you want to find out more about Level 26? That's the idea. If you don't, I get that idea too. Here's the trailer.
