Stop the Presses: Barack Obama "First African-European American President" (6283 hits)

Before we send the history books for final print, there’s a motion on the table suggested by tweeter that Barack Obama’s true heritage is overlooked. He suggest Obama be recognized as America’s first “African-European American” President. I’m sure many are having these same thoughts. In our new “post-race” America, we need to stop the presses and get it right.

What do you say? Does anyone second the motion?

NO, absolutely not. Historically, most of us are of multi-ethnic nationalities, African, European and Native American. Since most applications and forms lack the designation suggested, I see no reason to placate those individuals who are uncomfortable and angry due to the election results. They need to get over it.

We wouldn't so easily get over this or anything else for that matter. Also, most applications do suggest designation. Lastly, we're talking about his immediate family who will stand with him on inauguration day and should be recognize, not to mention the memory of his mother and grandparents, who without whom he would certainly not be president.

Listen to the Chocolate pages Show tonight and call in. That's the topic tonight from one who is bi-racial. We have the first African American U.S. President or should we say "bi-racial" president? What does this really mean? Will this bring races together? Will sterotypes go away and will races really have reconciliation? Best selling Elizabeth Atkins and Linda Leigh Hargrove discuss how families and communities deal with these issues & secrets - from experience and from their books. Date / Time: 11/6/2008 6:00 PM

It doesn't matter that he's black, white, biracial, purple ,green, red or blue, He's our President by the grace of Almighty God. God Know s what we all need and he gave us Obama for president because he knew what would be better for all people and who would bring us all together. I think we are all blessed to have him. let the prayers of protection contnue. If God be for us,then who can be against us.

Yes, Yalanda, they do have designations, however, there is no designation stating African-European American. they are listed separately AND above them it says 'Choose One' not 'Choose all that apply'.

Also, you should know that according to 'their" definition, ONE drop of black blood makes you black.

George that's funny. how can i get you to give in on this?

You're right, it is funny, but there have been a number of idiotic items in the past few days including one with a cardboard box trap with a big watermelon as bait with the caption 'Breaking News: a Plot to Kidnap Obama'. how come there isn't one with, instead of a watermelon, using a human brain with a caption reading 'Breaking News: A plot to catch Palin' or better yet, a caricature of Palin as the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz with a caption reading, 'If I only had a brain'.

is it a black man that's now President? what's wrong in representing who he truly is? are other races invisible to us? do we hold "all" accountable to racism?

on another note - during the time that Barack Obama was born, most white females were putting their "mixed race" kids up for adoption. Yes this family raised him with the true belief that he could one day be president - and yes he did.

Here's one for you: If he is a good president, he will be called bi-racial; if he is a bad president he will be called black. Just to piggy-back on your comment Yalanda, what about those people that could 'pass'? It is about perception, what people see.

I think racism is about perception and what people see. I was thinking about Oprah with the shopping incident. I bet she gets the "double take" all day long every where she goes because maybe even her "fans" see color first which brings on their immediate perception of black females. Then comes the "double take" when they probably realize its her - and I bet a lot of squirming afterwards with them trying to get away from their thinking and racism they immediately projected on to her.

I've been with celebrities and athletes and seen the "double take". Hard to shake off the hate. For that I say Obama is black at first glance. But if we are going to be about true change, we've got to learn more about people and be respectful of who they are and who they want to be. I'd really like to see humanity grow out of this.

That is one of the things change is about. It should be about the content of the character, which can only be determined by knowing a person. The unwillingness to learn only promotes ignorance and false stereotypes. We don't have to agree, and that's fine. I prefer to talk to people, then I can decide for myself if you are as dumb as a brick or that you have a head on your shoulders.

This might take the topic in a different direction. But I'll say this. At the beginning of the presidential run, Barack Obama asked that those who believed in him host viewing parties for his announcement that he would run. I signed up for the site on the day it launched and hosted a party. "Difficult" doesn't even describe the task of getting "our folk" to get involved at that level of the unknown. One year into the process people were still asking "is there a brother running for President." Now we seem to be the aficionados and running with the claim of victory.

Back to the topic - we live in a country with a race construct. Its very hard to get to the content of character which might be tertiary in the judgment process. Glad to hear you do allow for some dialogue before you judge a person.

Irma,
The real world has yet to be defined and for the most part is not defined by race and pigment. Only 3 countries were designed and nearly destroyed over pigmentation - having a race construct. We live under a veil in America that keeps us distracted with black/white - to mortal enemies who live side by side.

Interesting facts: Hawaii became a state in 1959. Obama was born in 1961. Loving law passed in 1967.

are you upset because your brother could pass?

yalanda lattimore-DryerBuzz.com
Irma I don't know where you're coming from. My point was to show that people should and can be recognized for who they want to be. Therefore as you have said about your sibling who made a choice - then those who want to recognize Obama and his family for being like them should also be able to do so. Hence they should be able to call him African European American President. Also as I said, its very hard for us to talk about this subject without all the emotion. Emotion keeps us from seeing another side, another perspective because of the history from which we operate. Like George said, we don't have to agree and i don't expect that we will. Like many I have family members that could pass but wouldn't dare.

I remember one day in class a White young lady told this Black student that "when I see you, I do not see color" for which his response to her was, "As I identify Black I will not allow you to take away how I choose to identify myself, White girl"

for example you will never see me use "b" and not "B" when I write Black as a race identity. My choice. On forms I put Ebonics as my first language. I still do not speak standard English as it sounds weird to me, again my choice.

Me, I am in total agreeement with this younge man...You can not identify me to myself as you choosing who I am as this is my choice!

Yalanda, please look at it from what you hear most often about Black men...do not take care of their children, do drugs, in jail, school drop outs, pro athlets, singers, dancers if they make money LEGALLY? Now where does Obama fit into this?

Did he start out with these words: TOO BLACK, no Black man can get into the White house because White people will not vote for him...

Only truth and real world happenings not being in denial would even bother with this Obama being a Black man...H---, they are not now even calling him as Muslim, Marxist, communist,etc...Why is this Yalanda or did you miss all of this???do not worry, Obama Hussein Obama has been called according to how "others" define him all of his life...It has not stopped him from now being called President Barack Hussein Obama now has it???? so please grow up/wake up or just join the real world...(smile)

And, what does any of that have to do with my comment.I lived on Ohau Hawaii from 62 to 65 for which my oldest child was born there in 1964, so what???? My children's grand mother is White, some of my sisters with their gray eyes and red hair can pass for White , so what does this have to do with subjective:beliefs, valuing another person for I am sure that the KKK would hang me but not my brother Theadore because they would never believe him to be Black...again what is the point you are trying to make to me...as this is what I maen about "the real world"!!!!!!

Yalanda, once again you are replacing what I am saying, the only problem my brother ever had was being a proud Black man even when others tried to convince him to not be. You know like getting the Job event hough he was college educted and fully qualified to get if not being Black! And, No Yalanda ALL Black family are not talked about on the TV. We have private lives where we are as one unit not a better than or less then...

Where did you get Pass/up set from? Hell my own daughter goes through this nightmare about having to tell people that she is Black...again this is from the real world...(smile) No, I do not hate my 3 brothers and one sister and my oldest child that can pass, but why should they? They are proud of who they are and what good they have brought to this planet that has made it a better place for their family, friends and everyone who have ever come into contact with them. Oh, in the REAL WORLD that is...get away from tha TV and White African-American history on being Black in America...

all most forgot, did the voters have any thing to do with Obama becoming our next president. I know that your reality will never allow you to enclude rev. J. Wright and Oprah or Obama thanking Rev Moss in hs last speech before election now can you...I am sure that you can not as this is what happened off of planet "Stuck on Stupid" as Rev. Wright calls the place that this off the wall reality comes from... Every thing is just fine as long as you believe that Obama is not a Muslim, correct??????(smile)but these wars will end because those who are fighting believe that he is and will stop trying to make them become Christians. Watch, OK...

...did you over look you question/statement about my"brother's passing as not subjective(of you)or that this statement-conclusion was from an 'emotional' point of view. This is why I try to always come from a logical point of view...(smile)and why you have made it a point to try and change what it is that you and I both have said on your own post. Please look back at your own words in reply to my comments...It is all up to you...I am able to move on...Or please try to understand that/why I CHOOSE to begin following the NSA buddhist philosophy over 22 years ago to be able to get over the wrong-right points of views and on to there is not right or no wrong ,not better than-no less than when it comes to mankind form of reasonings just dialogue as I try to do on this site...

..almost forgot, Yalanda is there any place in you to say things like speaking the "truth"?From where I stand, Obama is Not "like" me at all!!!!! This is because I see Obama as an individual and to M-E this makes him UNIQUE...Not like me...

and by the way you have no way of knowing who I voted for now do you????????? and, yet you have taken it upon yourself to 'assume' that I voted for Obama. Why did you do this.No just an expresssion (smile)as I am not interested,I do need, want or require an answer from you.
