How to Beat the Holiday Blues (1094 hits)

From Minister Cheryl Merchant

The year-end holidays are approaching. Many people experience this time of year as a time of fond reflection; however, for some, holidays are emotionally difficult. Unfortunate negative experiences while growing up and significant losses like the death of a loved one, divorce or separation including the breakup of a significant relationship, plunges them into the well of Holiday Blues.

Here are some tips for beating the Holiday Blues:

1. Do something new. Doing something as simple as getting new Christmas decorations, or changing the color of your bathroom or kitchen accessories, or if affordable and you've never done it before, taking a holiday trip, can make a pleasant difference.

2. Be a participator in the holiday celebrations rather than a spectator. Why not give a holiday party?

3. Be a blessing to others, who are less fortunate if you don't have local family (or if you do have one). Serve them Christmas dinner. This helps you to realize that you are blessed.

4. Practice self-care. Don't overextend yourself physically or financially.

5. Express your feelings. Talk about your feelings (especially negative ones) to someone you trust (friend, relative, minister or therapist). I strongly stress the importance of not harboring negative emotions that can produce anxiety, depression and stress. I call negative emotions "stuff". Everyone has "stuff" whether he or she is honest enough to admit or not. Deal with your "stuff".

6. Enjoy the holidays.

7. Remember to say a Prayer of Thanks. Be thankful for the Divine blessings you received in 2008, and the Divine blessings and possibilities you expect to receive in 2009.

8. Repeat this affirmation: "I am more than a conqueror". Saint Paul

Great tips, Min. Kelley, for beating the Holiday Blues. This truly is a trying time for some, while all around them people are filled with holiday cheer, but for them it's the roughest time of the year. I can somewhat relate, having faced my first Thanksgiving without my dear mother, who made her heavenly transition this past April. I found myself left with empty spaces in the day. Thanksgiving was always at moms, no matter how she felt, it was the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, dressing, mac & cheese, yams, greens, sweet potatoe pie and that good old German Chocolate Cake. Well, before you ask, no, I did not inherit the cooking gene, so I went to my daughters for Thanksgiving, and enjoyed a wonderful, traditional meal, her dressing recipe came straight from my mom, the legacy continues. The day was filled surrounded by loved one's and fond memories, and the strength in knowing, yes, "I am more than a conqueror".
