Joe Biden Awards Pope Francis The Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Joe Biden awards Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, the highest civilian honor in the United States, recognizing his dedication to peace, human rights, care for the poor, and environmental protection. By Salvatore Cernuzio

In one of his final acts as leader of the United States, President Joe Biden conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction—the nation’s highest civilian honor—upon Pope Francis. The announcement was made during a telephone call between the two leaders on January 11.

The meeting, initially scheduled as an in-person audience at the Vatican on January 10, was cancelled due to the wildfire emergency in Los Angeles, which prevented Biden from traveling to Italy.

A New Conversation

The phone call marked the second dialogue between Biden and Pope Francis, following a prior exchange on December 20. That earlier conversation focused on human rights, particularly the Pope’s concerns about federal death row inmates. Subsequently, Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 individuals, demonstrating a shared commitment to justice and compassion.

In both conversations, Biden expressed gratitude for the Pope’s unwavering efforts to alleviate global suffering, promote human rights, and protect religious freedoms. These are among the reasons cited for awarding the Medal of Freedom.

The honor has been bestowed upon 19 other distinguished individuals this year, recognizing their exceptional contributions to the prosperity, values, and security of the United States, global peace, and other critical endeavors. Observers had noted that this year’s list of recipients seemed incomplete, a mystery now revealed as Biden had reserved the announcement of the Pope’s recognition for this occasion.

The Official Statement

The official statement released by the White House reads:

“As a young man, Jorge Bergoglio sought a career in science before faith led him to a life with the Jesuits. For decades, he served the voiceless and vulnerable across Argentina. As Pope Francis, his mission of serving the poor has never ceased. A loving pastor, he joyfully answers children’s questions about God. A challenging teacher, he commands us to fight for peace and protect the planet. A welcoming leader, he reaches out to different faiths. The first pope from the Southern Hemisphere, Pope Francis is unlike any who came before. Above all, he is the People’s Pope – a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world.”

Biden’s Tribute

The award was presented to the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, on Pope Francis’ behalf. A photo shared by Biden’s official account on X (@POTUS) shows the moment, accompanied by a heartfelt message:

“Pope Francis, your humility and your grace are beyond words, and your love for all is unparalleled. As the People’s Pope, you are a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world. Today, it was my honor to award His Holiness Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction.”

A Historical Precedent

This marks the second time a Pope has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. On June 4, 2004, President George W. Bush presented the award to Pope John Paul II during a Vatican visit, recognizing his tireless advocacy for peace and human dignity.

Pope Prays For Those Affected By Fires In La, Asks For Prayers For Peace

Pope Francis turns his thoughts to the thousands of people affected by devastating fires in the US city of Los Angeles and renews his appeal to pray for peace. By Linda Bordoni

“I am close to the residents of Los Angeles County, California, where devastating wildfires have flared in recent days: I pray for all of you,” said Pope Francis after the recitation of the Angelus Prayer on Sunday.

His words of solidarity and concern come in the wake of a telegram addressed to Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles on Saturday in which he expressed his deep sadness over the “loss of life” and “widespread destruction” caused by the fires that continue to burn near the city of Los Angeles.

The Fires

Meanwhile, on Sunday the death toll from the wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area rose to 16 as crews battled to cut off the spreading blazes before potentially strong winds return that could push the flames toward some of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Five of the deaths reported so far are attributed to the “Palisades Fire” and 11 resulted from the “Eaton Fire”, according to a statement by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office on Saturday evening.

Officials said they expected that figure to rise as teams with cadaver dogs conduct systematic grid searches in levelled neighbourhoods. Authorities have established a centre where people can report the missing. And as new evacuation warnings left more homeowners on edge, there are fears that winds could move the fires toward the J. Paul Getty Museum and the University of California.

Prayers For Peace

After expressing his joy after having baptized several babies on Sunday morning, Pope Francis asked for prayers for them and their families.

He also mentioned the beatification of a missionary priest, Don Giovanni Merlini, whom he described as “a prudent advisor to many souls and a messenger of peace.”

“Let us invoke his intercession as we pray for peace in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the entire world,” the Pope said reiterating his tireless appeal and reminder that war is always a defeat.

“Let us not fail to pray for peace. Let us remember that war is always a defeat.”

Gaza: Israel bombs school sheltering displaced people
A least 20 Palestinians were killed and scores wounded on Saturday in Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip.
By Nathan Morley

A least 20 Palestinians were killed and scores wounded on Saturday in Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip.

According to the Palestinian civil defence, eight Palestinians, including two children and two women, lost their lives, and 30 others, including 19 children, were wounded in an Israeli bombing on a school housing displaced people in Jabalia.

Amid all this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given the green light for a delegation to leave for Doha to continue proceeding with a deal with Hamas to release the Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

Meanwhile, displaced families in Gaza are struggling to find refuge from the elements.

Driving rain, fierce winds and sinking temperatures, combined with the impact of Israel’s ongoing military assault on Gaza, means winter is a struggle for survival for many.

Over one million people are now living in tents or other makeshift shelters as the winter sets in.

Lebanon appeal

Meanwhile, an appeal is still open raising funds for Lebanon - prioritizing supplying food, winter aid, emergency repairs, and protection while addressing acute gaps in healthcare, water, and education.

The United Nations and Lebanon extended the Lebanon Flash Appeal last week, seeking U$371 million to aid civilians impacted by the recent war and ongoing humanitarian emergency.

Over 125,000 people are still displaced in the country.

Syria humanitarian emergency

Elsewhere, UN humanitarians continue to distribute much-needed food assistance to people in Syria.

Recent figures reveal that more than 2.5 million people across the country, including people in camps, collective centres and host communities, received bread between late November and early January.

Last week, a Qatari Air Force plane transporting 23 tons of humanitarian aid landed in Damascus as part of Qatar's air bridge to support Syrians.

From the site of the just-consecrated Church of Jesus' Baptism in Jordan, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa share their great joy for the historic event that brought several thousand pilgrims toward the Jordan River.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov - Al-Maghtas Baptism site, Jordan

"We know that around us everything talks about conflicts, divisions, hatred, but today, we want to concentrate also on the other part of the life here, on the many people who want to give their lives to Jesus and to their neighbor."

In an interview with Vatican News, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, shared that desire following the Consecration of the Church of the Baptism of Jesus in Jordan on Friday morning.

The long-awaited event was presided over by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and drew some six thousand pilgrims and faithful.

At the Al-Maghtas Baptism site, the Cardinals shared their happiness for the faith-filled joyous occasion, which ought to encourage us likewise to be hopeful, rather than despondent, especially during the Jubilee of Hope.

Pope at Angelus: ‘Through Baptism we are reborn to new life’
Pope Francis reflects on the Baptism of the Lord which, he says, serves as a reminder of the intimacy of God’s love, manifested in the humanity of Jesus, and invites believers to carry this love forward, living as children of the one Father who accompanies us at every step of our journey.
By Linda Bordoni

Addressing the faithful during his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis reflected on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord that marks the close of the Christmas season.

Taking his cue from the Gospel of Luke, he invited Christians to contemplate the two elements highlighted in the reading: the face and the voice of God revealed at the River Jordan.

"The Gospel describes a scene of waiting,” Pope Francis said, “where Jesus steps forward to be baptized by John, joining the crowds who approach him with ‘a bare soul and bare feet.,” a scene, he said that is dear to him, and that highlights the humility with which the people came to receive the baptism of repentance.

The face and voice of God revealed
The Holy Father urged the faithful to reflect on God’s decision to reveal Himself through Jesus, establishing a special space for humanity to encounter Him.

“It is in the face of the beloved Son that we know who God truly is,” the Pope said.

The Pope also noted the voice of the Father that resounded during Jesus’ baptism and he encouraged believers to embrace the transformative gift of baptism.

Don't Forget The Date Of Your Baptism

Today’s celebration, the Pope said, invites us to deepen our personal connection with God by asking: “Do we feel loved and accompanied by God, or do we think He is far away from us? Do we listen to His voice?” He also posed a practical challenge: “Do we remember the date of our baptism?”

Cardinal Parolin: Christian Presence In The Middle East Is Essential

In a wide-ranging interview granted to Vatican News during his visit to Jordan, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin speaks about the latest developments in Syria and Lebanon, the Pope’s words to the Diplomatic Corps and the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China on the appointment of bishops. By Andrea Tornielli

Cardinal Pietro Parolin visited Jordan this week. On Friday, he presided over the solemn liturgy for the dedication of the new church of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, built on the site of Jesus’ baptism. In a sign of vitality and hope, more than six thousand faithful attended, filling the church to such an extent many were unable to find a place inside.

After the celebration, Vatican News spoke with the Secretary of State about current world events, including the words addressed by Pope Francis to the Diplomatic Corps on January 9, 2025.

Following is the text of the interview

We are in Jordan, in the Holy Land, at the site of Jesus’ baptism, which until a few decades ago was a minefield. Not far from here, a war triggered by Hamas’s attacks is ongoing, causing death and destruction inflicted mainly on civilians, particularly in Gaza. What message would you like to convey?

Cardinal Parolin: It was a very beautiful and well-organized celebration, but above all, it was one of great hope. And it is not because hope has become a cliché during this Jubilee year dedicated to it. The message that emerges from this day, I believe, is this: in a region ravaged by so many conflicts, torn apart by so many tensions, this once-mined area is now a stretch of cultivated land. This is already, in itself, a sign of hope: as the prophet says, swords can indeed be turned into ploughshares, and weapons can become instruments of peace. The large and lively participation of people is also a reason for hope. There are vital forces, and Christianity can help, with God's grace, to find paths to solve current conflicts.

Jordan is a nation where the Christian minority is integrated and feels part of the country. Unfortunately, this is not the case in other contexts. What is the role of Christians in the Middle East today?

Cardinal Parolin: Christians have been present in these countries since time immemorial and continue to be an integral and rightful part of Middle Eastern states and societies, even though past and recent events are encouraging them to emigrate. Consequently, the Christian communities in these countries are numerically shrinking. I would like to reaffirm this constitutive dimension of the Christian presence: Arab also means Christian because there is a Christian community rooted in the history of these lands. I would emphasize this fundamental and constitutive dimension of the Christian presence. Christians, as a constitutive part, can contribute in all fields. As the Pope has said many times, the Middle East without Christians would be poorer, lacking an essential expression of this region's very identity.

Are you concerned about the evolution of the situation in Syria?

Cardinal Parolin: I have read the positive statements that have been made, which align with the direction hoped for by the Pope in his address to the Diplomatic Corps. We hope that a new era can begin for Syria, where all citizens will have the same rights and privileges. This is the concept of citizenship that the Holy See also proposes for all countries: all citizens are equal, with equal rights and equal duties before the law. We truly hope that these statements will be followed by actions, ensuring the protection of the rights of minorities and Christians as well.

Pope At Jubilee Audience: ‘The Jubilee Invites Us To Begin Again’

In his first Saturday Jubilee Audience, Pope Francis highlights the Jubilee as a time for a new beginning, rooted in the transformative power of God’s Kingdom, drawing on the example of John the Baptist, a "great prophet of hope.” By Lisa Zengarini

At his first Jubilee Audience on Saturday, 11 January Pope Francis framed the Jubilee as a moment of grace, an invitation to "begin again." These words resonated throughout his Catechesis, serving as both a call to action and a reminder of the Jubilee's essence: the opportunity for everyone to start anew from God, our ultimate source of hope.

To Hope Is To Begin Again

Hope, the underpinning theme of the 2025 Holy Year, will be the focus of this new cycle of bi-weekly audiences, which will integrate the traditional Wednesday catechetical sessions throughout the year, representing an ideal embrace for pilgrims visiting Rome in search of "a new beginning."

Addressing nearly 8,000 people in the Paul VI Hall, Pope Francis centred his reflection on John the Baptist, whom he described as a "great prophet of hope."

John The Baptist A great Prophet Of Hope

Highlighting John's pivotal role in the history of salvation. the Pope referred to Jesus' praise of him as the "greatest among those born of women” (Lk 7:24,26-28).

Jubilee: Tangible Signs Of Hope Along Way To Jubilee Of Prisoners

Catholic Mobilizing Network, the leading Catholic anti-death penalty advocacy organization in the United States, takes us behind the music of “Redemption Way,” a unique hymn written by a prisoner following his visit to death row.
By Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, Catholic Mobilizing Network*

In December 2023, the deputy warden at Chillicothe Correctional Institution in Ohio, asked the prison’s male choir to sing for the men on death row at Christmastime. Moved by his death row experience, an incarcerated choir member wrote a hymn entitled “Redemption Way.” In 2024, the NIA men’s choir performed and recorded the song during a prison concert.

Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN) presented the public premiere of the choral music recording on January 3, during our first monthly prayer vigil of the Jubilee Year 2025. It was a privilege to share this moving music with our network of faithful prayer warriors and advocates who seek to dismantle systems of death and build up a culture of life.

Through his words “every man has dignity, every man has a soul, we see you, we hear you,” the composer Brian Hudak conveys respect for the human dignity of each person living on death row. His renaming of death row to “redemption way” reflects his own spiritual journey.

Sr. Mukari: Synodality will prove a ‘game-changer’ for women in Africa
In the wake of the Synod on Synodality, Catholic religious women in Africa are voicing their hopes for a Church that values and includes women more deeply, especially in leadership and community roles. By Susan Nzomo

For many religious sisters, the synodal process signals a long-overdue shift toward inclusion and shared responsibility. They believe that the Synod's outcomes could be transformative, especially in regions where leadership has traditionally been male-dominated.

In the past, leadership within the Church, particularly in theological and canonical fields, was largely reserved for men.

According to Sr. Lydia Mukari, with of the Mary Mother of God of Kakamega congregation, religious women had limited opportunities to engage in formal studies like theology, canon law, or scripture, and their voices were often absent from decision-making processes.

However, recent years have seen a gradual shift. More women, including religious sisters, are now pursuing advanced studies in theology and scripture, achieving qualifications that position them as knowledgeable contributors within the Church.

As Sr. Mukari told Vatican News, "For many years, women were seen as passive participants in the Church’s mission. But today, we are stepping into roles that allow us to share our God-given gifts in more profound ways. This change is not just for women—it strengthens the entire Church."

This shift has allowed women to take on roles as theologians and scripture scholars, expanding their capacity to influence and contribute to Church discourse and development.

Potential Impact Of The Synod On Synodality

Religious sisters are particularly hopeful that the recent Synod on Synodality will continue this momentum, leading to an even stronger recognition of women’s roles.

They believe the Synod can still be a “game-changer” for the Church in Africa and worldwide.

Sr. Mukari emphasized the importance of this potential change, saying: "The Synod is not just a meeting. It’s a movement toward justice and equality in the Church. By formally recognizing women’s leadership, the Church can become a true reflection of Christ’s inclusive mission."

By amplifying women’s voices, the Church can foster a community where all members, regardless of gender, feel integral to its mission and future.

Such an outcome could have far-reaching implications, especially in African societies where leadership roles are traditionally male-dominated.

She said the Synod promoted equal involvement for women, adding that it will both enrich the Church and empower communities by demonstrating the value of women’s perspectives in guiding the Church forward.

"In many parts of Africa, women are already leaders in families, communities, and educational institutions. It’s time for the Church to formally recognize this reality and invite us to lead with dignity and purpose," said Sr. Mukari.

Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia On Synodality And The Church In Africa

Bishop Nestor-Désiré Nongo-Aziagbia, the Bishop of Bossangoa, Central African Republic, invites Catholics in Africa to embrace the Church’s call to synodality. By Martha Mvula – Lusaka

Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia participated in the Second Session of the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod on Synodality, which was held in Rome from 2 to 27 October 2024, on the theme “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission.”

For Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia, living the universal dimension of the Church was one of his most enlightening experiences during his month-long stay in Rome.

“For the past two years, the universality of the Church has actually helped me to experience this one body of Christ’s Church in a completely new way,” said Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia, who also serves as the President of the Bishop’s Conference of Central African Republic.

Communion, Unity And Reconciliation

According to Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia, each member of the Synod, regardless of where they were from, was given an opportunity to share their concerns.

He said the African delegates to the Synod had their concerns addressed, and yet everyone could freely contribute to the universal Church’s desire for renewal.

“Some of the concerns we shared in one way affect the people of God worldwide. This was also true of concerns we listened to from other regions,” he said.

Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia said it was a unique experience to witness cardinals, bishops, priests, religious men and women, lay people, and young people working as one in the General Assembly to move the Church forward so that no one is left behind.

In Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia’s view, the Synodal process has taught the Church and the world that, in order to promote peace, communion and reconciliation around the world, there is no alternative to sitting down and listening to each other.

“Some of the directions towards peace from the Synod on Synodality will strengthen the Bishops Conference to continue to promote peace in their respective countries by encouraging those who propose war to sit down tougher and talk,” stressed Bishop Nestor.

Challenges Of The Church In Africa

Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia also addressed some of the African Church’s pastoral challenges brought to the global forum.

Other challenges discussed, he said, were to do with tensions between cultural convictions and global discussions about inclusivity. He clarified that, “Contrary to speculations and some misunderstanding, the Synod was not called to discuss alternative lifestyles,” he emphasised.

What everyone in the Synod Hall agreed about is that no one should ever be denied pastoral care and accompaniment.

“Whoever requires pastoral care, including those who are LGBTQ+ or living in polygamous situations, should receive pastoral understanding,” said Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia.

Where there are challenges in the African setting, for example, on the issue of polygamous marriages, the recommendation of the Synod was further study and reflection on these challenges, the Bishop said.

He commended the African Church for speaking with one voice under the guidance of SECAM, and said the challenging pastoral concerns would be further discussed at the SECAM’s General Assembly, scheduled for Nabuli, Kenya, July 2025.

SECAM, the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, brings together the bishops of the African continent.

Prioritising the role of women in the Church
Other issues discussed at the Synod that require further discussion include “how to help women participate fully in the life of the Church,” said Bishop Nongo-Aziagbia. “It is something that the whole Church desires to see and encourages.”

The Bishop urged the Christian faithful to embrace Synodality as a way of living and being Church.

Pope To Children: True Friendships Share Hope And Pain

Meeting with children from an Oncology and Pediatric Hematology Clinic in Poland, Pope Francis encourages them to pray for those who cannot receive medical care. By Kielce Gussie

Hope was the central theme of Pope Francis’ message to the young patients receiving treatment at the Oncology and Pediatric Hematology Clinic in Wrocław, Poland.

Greeting them in the Vatican, the Pope spoke in light of the Jubilee of 2025, calling it a “year in which God wants to grant us special graces.”

Give Hope To One Another

“We have the opportunity to give each other hope and love,” Pope Francis challenged the group.

He explained one of the reasons he felt joy ahead of the meeting was that children and young people are, for him, “signs of hope.” This is because Jesus is present in each of them, and, the Pope said, “where He is, there is hope that never disappoints.”

Through our own sufferings, we can unite ourselves to Jesus, who suffered willingly for us on the cross. Pope Francis called this “a test of friendship” because people are truly friends when “the joy of the other is also my joy, and the pain of the other is also my pain.”

Friends Of Jesus

The Pope reminded the children and young people that another sign of Jesus’ love for them can be seen in the people around them.

"The love and constant presence of your parents, the kind and tender smiles of the doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists who care for you and work to improve your health”—all with the goal of helping these children live their hopes and dreams.

Pope Francis stressed that he shares Jesus’ perspective: calling the group his friends. He offered them a challenge to serve the Church by offering their prayers and sufferings for the Pope.

Continuing, he asked them to join him in praying for the "children—unfortunately, many of them—who do not have the possibility to receive care.”
